The Cooks River Sustainability Initiative is working on two subcatchments in the Canterbury local government area. They are known as the Ashbury and Upper Wolli Creek subcatchments.

Residents from the Ashbury Subcatchment are invited to attend a Planning Forum for their area to be held over two nights on Tuesday 18th November AND Tuesday 25th November from 6-9pm at the Ashbury Senior Citizens Centre, Ashbury. 1. Subcatchment facts
Name: Ashbury.
Location: This subcatchment covers part of the suburb of Ashbury includes sections of Lees and Peace Parks, Canterbury Park and Canterbury Park Racecourse.
Population: 1,700+
Area: 102 hectares.
Land use: The subcatchment area is mostly residential but it does include a small number of shops, a racecourse, park areas and two schools.
This subcatchment covers two local government areas which are Ashfield (12ha) and Canterbury (90ha). It is currently only one of two subcatchments that includes river frontage; the other subcatchment is South Strathfield. The suburb of Ashbury contains heritage conservation areas and has a significant amount of open space.
The initiative is collecting information about the physical and social characteristics of this area. We are also reviewing the major organisations involved in the management of water and other environmental issues. This information will be used in community forums to help develop a future vision and action plan for your local area.

2. Subcatchment facts
Name: Upper Wolli Creek.
Location: This subcatchment covers parts of the suburbs Beverly Hills, Kingsgrove and Bexley North. The subcatchment is bordered by Homer St to the north and Stoney Creek Road to the south and it includes a section of the M5 motorway.
Population: 10,175.
Area: 437 hectares.
Land use: The subcatchment area has a variety of landuses which includes residential, commercial and industrial. There are also a number of park areas, schools and a railway station (Kingsgrove). This subcatchment covers three local government areas which are Canterbury, Hurstville, and Rockdale. There is some remnant Cumberland Plain vegetation adjacent to the M5 motorway.
The initiative is collecting information about the physical and social characteristics of this area. This information will be used in community forums to help develop a future vision and action plan for your local area.
If you work or live, in this area you can get involved by taking part in the community water survey (available soon) , by attending community forums and/or by being a part of the community working group (available soon) that will be formed as part of the project.
