Rookwood Road Subcatchment Planning Forum

The Rookwood Road Subcatchment Planning Forum was held on the 28th of October 2009 at the Potts Hill Grey Hound Social Club. At the Forum residents and other stakeholders discussed water management issues within the Subcatchment and then developed 2031 goals and actions to reach the Rookwood Road Subcatchment vision. “Our streets are beautiful, interactive spaces that are used day and night by the community. Our parks are safe, accessible and sustainable living spaces that connect the community to each other and the environment around them. Our waterways are clean, rainwater and greywater are collected for reuse, and the community and other stakeholders work together to promote water conservation and recycling.”

Do you own or manage a business within the Rookwood Road Subcatchment?

The OurRiver team in conjunction with Bankstown City Council is undertaking a survey of businesses within the Rookwood Road Subcatchment. If you manage or own a business within the Subcatchment and would like to complete the survey now click here. By completing the survey you will not only contribute to sustainable water management in the Rookwood Road Subcatchment but have the chance to win a $100 voucher to the restaurant of you choice.

Why undertake a Business Water Survey?
Insights into community knowledge, values, expectations, behaviours and preferences provide information as to the likely community interest in supporting and adopting sustainable water innovations.

In 2008 the OurRiver team completed a Community Water Survey in the Rookwood Road Subcatchment to ascertain the communities knowledge of and attitudes towards water sustainability. It was recognised that business owners and managers should also be surveyed if we were to gain a complete picture of attitudes and knowledge within the Subcatchment. The business Survey will be completed and the results posted here by the end of July 2009.

Subcatchment facts

Name: Rookwood Road
Location: The Subcatchment covers parts of the suburbs of Potts Hill and Chullora and is bordered by the Hume Highway to the east and south; Avoca Street, Ashby Avenue, Brunker Road, Cooper Road to the west; and the northern sides of Potts Hill Reservoirs and the Chullora Railway Workshops to the north.
Population: 2,265
Area: 370 hectares
Land use: The Subcatchment consists largely of commercial and industrial areas with a small residential pocket in the south of the Subcatchment. The Subcatchment also contains the Potts Hill Reservoir which is surrounded by relatively large areas of green space.
This Subcatchment also contains the head waters of the Cooks River, Freshwater Creek. Officially Freshwater Creek begins at the Chullora Wetlands (an important local environmental asset) and flows into Strathfield golf course, Freshwater Park where the Cooks River proper begins.

The OurRiver team is collecting information about the physical and social characteristics of this area and reviewing the major organisations involved in the management of water and other environmental issues. This information will be used in community forums to help develop a future vision and action plan for your local area.

If you work or live in this area you can get involved by attending the upcoming future vision sessions for the Cooks River and the Rookwood Road Subcatchment. Dates to be announced.
